April 2022
Welcome to the April issue of the GSP Monthly Dispatch! This month, we bring you:
- Our newly published proficiency-based learning roadmap, which distills the foundational steps needed to implement a high-quality proficiency-based system of education
- An invitation to join us for our upcoming multi-day virtual summer institutes on the following topics: equitable and effective advisory systems, professional learning groups, racial equity in education, and grading for educational equity
- Three tools from our toolkits for educators and school communities: explore our scoring criteria overview, learn how to design scoring criteria with our design guide, and tune scoring criteria using our tuning protocol
Proficiency-Based Learning: A Roadmap for Educators
From our many years in diverse school settings, we’ve distilled the foundational steps needed to implement a high-quality proficiency-based system. These steps are not necessarily sequential, as there are many entry points for beginning your journey toward proficiency. Each toolkit embedded in this roadmap provides links to free resources developed by Great Schools Partnership staff and tested in hundreds of schools. While useful in isolation, each stop along the roadmap represents one component of a complex system.
Save the Dates for a Summer of Learning
Summer is the perfect opportunity to slow down and ask questions. How can we continuously improve our district, our school, our classroom practices? How can we ensure equitable outcomes for all students? As educators, how can we challenge and support each other throughout the academic year?
We invite you to explore and seek answers to questions such as these by attending one (or more!) of our multi-day virtual summer institutes.
Scoring Criteria Overview
Scoring criteria describe the quality of evidence at different levels of achievement for each performance indicator. Common scoring criteria are an essential component of a proficiency-based system.
Design Guide – Scoring Criteria
This design guide can be used as educators create or revise scoring criteria. Scoring criteria describe the evidence that demonstrates performance at each achievement level for a performance indicator.
Tuning Protocol – Scoring Criteria
This protocol helps you refine scoring criteria; this ensures the criteria illustrate increasingly complex cognitive demand, are task-neutral, focus on the quality of student work, and emphasize student assets
Thanks for reading! See you next month.
