Social Emotional Learning

“Most educators agree that we should cultivate a deep love for students, especially given the educational injustice too many students face in schools today. However, many of these same educators also ask, ‘What does love look like in education?’” -Shamari Reid, “Loving and Nurturing Young People,” Learning for Justice (2024)

Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) facilitates reflection on the questions: What am I feeling? How are my emotions impacting my actions? The Integrated Curriculum weaves SEL skills and strategies such as collaboration, conflict resolution, and critical self-reflection throughout the units as students engage in team-based projects and classroom discussions. These skills are important as students analyze how systems have impacted communities over time and explore their own identities in relation to broader social contexts. Most importantly, throughout the learning process, engaging in self-reflection in order to better understand how different events in the classroom impacts how they may be feeling. Each unit is designed to support students in becoming thoughtful changemakers, who lead with compassion, intention, and purpose.
