Born out of the Disability Rights and Inclusion Movement of the 1960s and 1970s, Universal Design has shifted the way everyday people are able to access the world around them – from curbs to elevators to push button systems. Universal Design for Learning (UDL) moves the Disability Rights and Inclusion Movement from public buildings to public schools by diving deep into methods for planning and creating learning environments that are responsive to each and every student’s needs. The Integrated Curriculum intentionally draws upon UDL throughout the unit plan templates in order to place equity at the center of the teaching and learning Vermont teachers design.
