Culturally Responsive Learning

“When the [curriculum] does not fit a child, we say things such as, ‘The child needs an intervention,’ and put the onus on the child and not the curriculum. Can you imagine if a designer created a gown for you, without your input, without learning about you, and when the day comes to try it on, it’s too small—and you’re told you need to go on a diet or gain weight? And you think, But you never took my measurements.” (p. 125-126.) Dr. Gholdy Muhammad, Unearthing Joy: A Guide to Culturally and Historically Responsive Teaching and Learning, (2023)
A hexagon labeled “ICVE: Integrated Curriculum for Vermont Educators” is surrounded by six segments, including Culturally Responsive Learning, Social and Emotional Learning, Trauma-Informed Education, and more.

In an interview with The 74 in 2019, Dr. Gloria Ladson-Billings explains that culturally relevant teaching “requires a focus on students’ learning, an attempt to develop their cultural competence, and to increase their sociopolitical or critical consciousness. And for me, that’s an all-or-nothing proposition – you can’t do one or two and say, ‘Oh, I’m being culturally relevant.’ You’ve got to do all three things.” When thinking about how to ensure curriculum, instruction, and assessment is culturally responsive, Billings’s three pillars – high expectations, culturally inclusive, and justice-oriented instruction – are essential to keep at the center of the design and refinement process. The Integrated Curriculum provides examples for what culturally responsive design may look like in action.
