DEW Collaborative: Current Demographics of the Region
Across the region, the racial demographics of students look noticeably different from that of the educator workforce. As the student populations across all six New England states have become increasingly racially, ethnically, and linguistically diverse, the educator workforce in New England remains predominantly white.

DATA SOURCESÂ
We sought to use the most up-to-date data available for each state. In some cases (CT, MA, RI), data was available through state education agency websites; in other cases (ME, NH, VT), we relied on 2017-18 data from the National Center for Educational Statistics.Â
CONNECTICUT: Student Data: CT Department of Education, Student Counts by Race/Ethnicity and Gender (2020-21); Educator Data: CT Department of Education, Educator Race/Ethnicity Trend Report (2020-21)
MASSACHUSETTS: Student Data: MA Department of Elementary and Secondary Education, Student Enrollment by Race/Ethnicity (2020-21); Educator Data: MA Department of Elementary and Secondary Education, Race/Ethnicity Staffing Report (2020-21)
RHODE ISLAND: Student Data: RI Department of Education, October Student Enrollment – All Schools (2019-20); Educator Data: RI Department of Education, State Report Card (2019-20) It should also be noted that more recent (2021-22) demographic data for students were available for RI students; however, the most recent educator data is from 2019-20. As such, we used data from the same year for both groups for comparability.
MAINE, NEW HAMPSHIRE, VERMONT: Student Data: U.S. Department of Education, National Center for Education Statistics, Common Core of Data (CCD), 2017-18. Educator Data: U.S. Department of Education, National Center for Education Statistics, National Teacher and Principal Survey (NTPS), 2017-18.
